Ethiopia
MELCA is one of Ethiopia’s most renowned environmental NGOs focussing on bio-cultural diversity and sustainable livelihoods of farmers and communities in Ethiopia. The director of MELCA, Dr Million Belay (lead researcher) has a PhD in transformative social learning and is an internationally recognised leader and activist in African bio-cultural concerns. He leads the social movement Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (Dr Million Belay is Director of AFSA).

Dr Million Belay Ali holds a PhD in social learning and biocultural diversity. He is founder and Director of MELCA – Ethiopia, a major environmental NGO. Since 2013, he has led and coordinated the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa. He has pioneered innovative methodologies for community mobilisation and intergenerational learning, e.g. participatory mapping, advocacy for the rights of local communities, and intergenerational learning. He has been involved in various environmental activist projects. In 2000 – 2002 he served as coordinator of Ethiopia’s civil society preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. He has served as research co-ordinator for the Institute for Sustainable Development and the youth for cultural biodiversity programme of the African Biodiversity Network. He has worked with community activist groups in numerous African countries. He was nominated for the 2012 UN Forest Hero Award, and received the National Green Hero Award in 2008.
